This second podcast, in our AGR BREAKS IT DOWN series, discusses the history of the Fracture seminars conducted by American Glass Research. The seminars originated from a litigation case in 1931 involving a soda bottle explosion, which bankrupted the Peerless Glass Company. The lack of standardized quality procedures and fracture diagnosis knowledge contributed to the case's outcome. In response, the Glass Container Association (GCA) approached Dr. Frank Preston, the founder of Preston Laboratories, to develop standardized testing procedures and educate the industry. Dr. Ghering, hired by Preston upon recommendation of the GCA, conducted the first fracture seminar in 1939 with five high-level attendees each from a separate company. Many ASTM standards related to glass containers were influenced by Preston's and Ghering's work, and their procedures became industry standards. The podcast also mentions Preston's laboratory, Preston Park, and his affinity for nature.
